If you are in the UK under HSMP which was applied before 03/04/2006 you will be eligible to apply for Indefinite Leave To Remain or UK Residency after 4 years continuous stay as per HSMP Forum Judicial Review Judgement. However if your initial HSMP application was submitted after 03/04/2006 you will need to complete 5 years continuous stay in the UK before you qualify for ILR. You will also need to pass Life in the UK Test before applying for ILR if your initial HSMP application was submitted after 03/04/2006.

Once you are granted Indefinite Leave To Remain in UK or UK Residency visa or UK Settlement visa, you are not subject to any restrictions of length of stay in the UK and you can take up any employment or do business or self-employment in the UK. Once your ILR application is approved you are considered settled in the UK and you can go out of the UK and enter UK freely without any restriction so long as you do not go out of the UK for more than 2 years continuously.
Once you have been granted Indefinite Leave to Remain you may also be eligible to apply for British naturalisation as a UK citizen.
